Stories are a natural part of user experience. They help create connections between a design team and the people who
will use the product. You’ve probably been telling stories all along – but haven’t thought about how to
use them effectively as part of our UX practice. Stories help us gather and communicate user research, put a human face on
analytic data, communicate design ideas, encourage collaboration and innovation, and create a sense of shared history and
purpose.
We’ll start with how and why stories work, and then look in detail at three specific areas of UX work and how to
use story effectively.
Learning about people, culture and context – why, when, and how our products might serve them – and then
sharing this understanding with the rest of the company in the form of stories and personas (a form of character sketch).
Generating and exploring design ideas, using stories to keep people (not technologies) in the center of our vision.
Testing those ideas to see if they make a good story that fits what we have learned about our users (or are they just
a reflection in the mirror).
Stories are also persuasive and can be a secret communications weapon to get your team (and management) engaged in
a new idea, design concept or approach to your work.
At each step, we will look at how stories fit into this aspect of UX, how to incorporate storytelling techniques effectively,
different story formats, and how to structure a compelling story for each purpose. You will leave this presentation with
ideas about how to get started adding stories to your own UX work.
The webinar is aimed at UX professionals looking for ways to make research and design ideas come alive, or to communicate
the value of the work more effectively. Whether this is the first time you’ve thought about stories, or you’re
already convinced they are a great idea, this talk is an opportunity to hear about how and why they should be part of your
UX toolkit – and share your own experiences with stories.
